Project Description

Space T Project : Jeonju City Library Twin Generation Space

What characteristics and desires do tweens have?

What kind of experiences do tween want?

The Space T Project was a project to create an exclusive tween space in a public library. It was done in 2019 with C-Program, SeeArt Foundation, and the Book Culture Foundation. “Tween” is a combination of the words “teenager” and “between”, and refers to children and adolescents 12 to 16 years old. GingerTProject helped design the experiences and environment at the Jeonju City Library, the first location of the Space T Project.

“When we say we want to make something, teachers give other options or lead us in a different direction if what we’re asking for sounds too hard. I h
ope that the adults we meet here will respect what we want to do and help us do it ourselves.”
-Youth participating in the SpaceT Project, Seoyeon and Yanni

Project Processes

  • We wanted to expand our understanding and work of the “next generation” to the “tween generation”.
  • We tried “piloting a pilot program”. Before the actual pilot with the youth, we simulated, reflected, and reiterated multiple times to perfect the program.
  • We created a signature program that reflects the opinions of the tween generation.
  • We experimented with passive programs, or programs where people can participate at their own pace without a set time or a facilitator.
  • We collaborated with multiple partners for this project, including the Space T team, user research experts, architects, librarians, and various others.

Project Insights

By exploring various methods within the project, we were able to learn how to communicate with the tween generation.

  • Listening to tweens: Tweens know what tweens want best. If you listen to the individual carefully, you will naturally hear the voice of the group.
  • Building trusting relationships: Experiences are facilitated through relationships. You need adults who can observe (listen) and create (reflect) the environment properly.
  • Creating a safe environment: Put people at the center of your work culture.
