Project Description

Study on Lifelong Learning in Goyang

What does it mean to be constantly learning?
How can we normalize lifelong learning to everyday learning?

“The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn. ” -Alvin Toffler, futurist

What does it mean to constantly learn? From April to September 2019, we asked citizens from Goyang city to imagine what changes would occur in the next five years if they tried lifelong learning. Together with Goyang city citizens, officials, and lifelong learning experts, we planned a five-year comprehensive development program for lifelong learning in Goyang.

Project Processes

  • The Goyang Citizen “Avengers”, the “Coke Team” (Co-Creation), and GingerTProject held workshops to lead a five year roadmap for lifelong learning.
  • We held a “sabujaksabujak” (easygoing, steady work) workshop, where we learned how Goyang citizens felt about lifelong learning.
  • We identified 8 citizen learning personas by age, gender, and participation level.

Project Insights

  • In the past, education about lifelong learning was mainly conducted by institutions. They were often one-time lessons targeted toward the older generation. We need to ensure that learning is commonplace for all stages of life so we can grow as a community together.
  • We were able to discover the citizens’ needs through the “sabujaksabujak” workshop: an online platform that is easy to use, connection of people and resources, a community of diverse tastes, a growth mindset, citizen initiative, and spaces to use.
  • The three vision keywords based on the needs and personas we observed were accessibility, diversity, and sustainability.
